In Capua's old town, the Castello delle Pietre is an 11th-century Norman fortress built with blocks from the Roman amphitheatre.

Along Via Andreozzi, in the heart of Capua and close to the urban route of the Appian Way, stands the Castello delle Pietre (Castle of the Stones), one of the two medieval castles surviving in the town. Its construction is attributed to Richard Drengot, who conquered Capua in 1062. The name is linked to the large reused blocks taken from the Roman amphitheatre and visible on the façade. We recommend observing the L-shaped plan with its square keep, the late Gothic portal and the Renaissance windows, distinguishing the original single-light windows from the 19th-century neo-Gothic crenellations. We like the legend linking the castle to the magician Klingsor of Parzival: a touch of fantasy for a fortress that also endured the siege of 1191.
