Ancient Casilinum, the river port on the Volturno from which today's Capua was born.

Casilinum was a small Roman town on the bank of the Volturno, where the Via Appia crossed the river. In 216 BC it held out for a long time against Hannibal's siege. In the 9th century, after the destruction of ancient Capua, its inhabitants moved here and founded present-day Capua. Traces of the ancient town remain beneath the city and near the Roman bridge.
