17th-century sanctuary at 1,200 metres, at the highest point of Letino, built within the castle walls and incorporating two towers.
At the highest point of Letino, at about 1,200 metres, stands the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Castello, the symbol of the village. In the Lombard period a castle was built here against Saracen raids, later enlarged by the Normans. The present church dates from the 17th century, as recalled by the date 1629 on a lintel, but a place of worship already existed in the 14th century; its structure incorporates two towers of the walls.We like the local-stone gabled façade, with a portal topped by an oculus. Inside, the single nave is marked by eight polychrome marble altars with canvases of the Neapolitan school, and on the high altar the statue known as the Queen of the Matese is venerated. We recommend going up on the third Sunday of September, the day of the most heartfelt feast.
