Church of San Tommaso d'Aquino in Piedimonte Matese

  • Visit: about 20 min

In Piedimonte Matese the Church of San Tommaso, known as San Domenico, from 1414, built on the remains of a Roman temple next to the Marrocco Museum.

In Piedimonte Matese the Church of San Tommaso, also known as San Domenico, was built in 1414 on an earlier building, which itself stood on the remains of a Roman temple. The gabled façade opens with a pointed portal, while the bell tower ends in an octagonal spire; at its base you can see metopes and triglyphs from the ancient temple. The single-nave interior, remodelled in the 17th century, preserves a 16th-century wooden choir and panels and frescoes from the following centuries. We like the fact that the former Dominican friary, with its frescoed cloister, now houses the Raffaele Marrocco Civic Museum: we recommend combining the two visits for a complete tour of art and archaeology.
