Church · Ariano Irpino (AV)

The church of San Pietro de Reclusis in Ariano Irpino, with 16th-century frescoes and the hermitage where Saint Otto Frangipane lived.
In the district of the same name, just below Ariano's historic centre, stands the church of San Pietro de Reclusis, which preserves 16th-century frescoes. The name recalls the recluses, those who chose a secluded life of silence and prayer. We like its out-of-the-way position, which offers a moment of calm just a few steps from the streets of the centre.Next to the church is the hermitage where Saint Otto Frangipane, the town's patron saint, spent the last years of his life in the shade of an ancient lime tree. We love the peaceful atmosphere of the place. We suggest visiting to get to know a central figure in Ariano's spiritual life, after whom the town hospital is also named.
