18th-century mother church of Cuccaro Vetere, dedicated to St Peter, holding a relic of the Cross.
The mother church of San Pietro Apostolo is the main place of worship of Cuccaro Vetere, a Cilento hill village rich in churches. Its present appearance results from 18th- and 19th-century remodelling, with Baroque stucco decoration and a single nave.It holds a relic of the Holy Cross, the Legno Santo, carried in procession on Good Friday. We suggest noticing the inlaid marble high altar and the bronze door with scenes from the life of St Peter. We also like the local legend about the patron's statue, which arrived by sea and was cunningly won from the neighbouring villages.
