Convent · Cuccaro Vetere (SA)

Ruins of the Franciscan convent founded in 1333, linked to the legend of the mule and the relic of the Holy Wood.
Only ruins remain today of this convent, founded in 1333, but its story is fascinating. It is said that some travelling friars stopped here to rest their mules, laden with sacred furnishings. When it was time to leave, one of the mules stayed kneeling and would not move. Unloading it, the friars found a relic of the Cross of Christ.Convinced it was a sign, they built the convent on that very spot, which became a destination for pilgrims. Nearby a fair called the Legno Santo (Holy Wood) was also born, still held on Good Friday. When the convent fell into ruin, the relic was taken to the church of San Pietro. We recommend visiting the remains while imagining the legend.
