Church of San Martino Vescovo in San Martino Sannita

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 435 m

Parish church of the main village, linked to an ancient 9th-century church that gave its name to the village and to the 11 November feast.

The Church of San Martino Vescovo is the parish church of the main village and also serves the hamlets of Lentace and Mancusi. The village's very name comes from an ancient church dedicated to the saint, already recorded in the 9th century as San Martino in Cucciano. We like to think that here the history of the village and that of its place of worship have walked together for centuries. The best time to visit is 11 November, the day of the patronal feast. An old statue depicting the young Martin on horseback sharing his cloak with a poor man is carried in procession, a simple and touching scene. We also recommend stopping for a few views over the surrounding hills.
