Church of San Giorgio Martire in San Giorgio del Sannio

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 400 m

Mother church of San Giorgio del Sannio on Piazza Risorgimento, commissioned in the 18th century by the Spinelli princes and now also a sanctuary of St Gerard.

Overlooking Piazza Risorgimento, the mother church of San Giorgio Martire is the religious heart of San Giorgio del Sannio. It was built in the 18th century by Prince Carlo III Spinelli, who in those years redesigned the centre of the town with his palace and a fountain, and in 1720 founded a convent next to it.Today the church is also the diocesan sanctuary of St Gerard Majella, with the adjoining Monastery of the Visitation. We like the façade's sober lines, typical of Sannio architecture. We recommend coming on 23 April, the patron saint's day, when the procession livens up the streets of the centre.
