In Pignataro Maggiore, the Church of San Giorgio Martire, the town's first parish, built before the year 1000 on the remains of a Roman villa.
At the foot of the hill of the same name, north of Pignataro Maggiore, the Church of San Giorgio Martire was built between the 8th and 9th centuries on the remains of a 1st-century BC Roman villa, and retains Byzantine-influenced features. It was the town's first parish, mentioned in the ecclesiastical tithe registers of the early 14th century.Originally built with a single nave and a timber truss roof, it gained a second nave in the 15th–16th centuries, while the bell tower was incorporated into the building and the façade was enriched with volutes. Damaged by earthquakes, it has been restored. We suggest checking its opening before you go: either way, we like admiring it from outside, among the traces of more than a thousand years of history.
