The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the parish church of Fragneto l'Abate, a small hill village in the Sannio. Its origins are ancient but not precisely documented; what we know for certain is that it was rebuilt in the early 18th century, after damage caused by an earthquake. Next to the building rises the bell tower, a landmark for those arriving in the village.We like to think of it as the meeting point of village life, where the main religious celebrations take place. We recommend visiting it at leisure during a stroll through the centre, and then continuing towards the hamlet of San Matteo, where a small church holds an 18th-century wooden statue of the apostle.
