Medieval Aqueduct of Salerno
L'acquedotto longobardo con gli archi ogivali, chiamato «ponti del diavolo».
Museum · Salerno (SA)

In Arechi Castle, about 300 metres above Salerno, a museum displays ceramics, glass, metalwork and coins found in the excavations.
Arechi Castle dominates Salerno from Monte Bonadies: built as a Byzantine stronghold in the 6th century, it was strengthened by the Lombard duke Arechi II and later enlarged by the Normans, Angevins and Aragonese. Excavations begun in the 1990s yielded thousands of finds, now gathered in the museum set up inside the fortress. We especially love the ceramics section: early medieval red-banded fragments, 13th-century proto-majolica and 14th–15th-century sgraffito ware, including a piece with a fish. We also recommend looking at the medieval glass, an early 14th-century gilded bronze spur and the hoards of coins, before looking out over the gulf from the ramparts.
