Castle · Grottaminarda (AV)

Castello d'Aquino

  • Visit: about 1 h 15 min
  • 432 m

Grottaminarda's medieval castle, turned into a lordly residence and now home to a museum and the municipal library.

The Castello d'Aquino has medieval origins and takes its name from the family that held the fief of Grottaminarda until 1528. Struck several times by earthquakes, it kept its defensive role until the 16th-century wars; after the earthquakes of 1694 and 1732 it was turned into a lordly residence.Today the castle has come back to life in the service of the community: since 2009 part of it has housed the civic museum, with finds from local history, and a library of over eight thousand volumes. We suggest visiting to discover Grottaminarda's past in an evocative setting. We love seeing how an old military stronghold has become a place of culture.
