A 10th-century Lombard fortress with a square plan and four cylindrical towers, still dominating the village of Bonito.

The Castrum Boneti was founded in the 10th century by the Lombards as a stronghold on the border between the County of Ariano and the Duchy of Benevento. We enjoy reading its structure: a square plan with four cylindrical towers and, once, a wooden drawbridge. Over the centuries it was altered many times, a sign of a long and eventful history. After the Normans, the castle passed to the Angevins and to the local Bonito family, then to the Orsini in 1445, the Pisaniello in 1648 and the Bonito again in 1674, until its annexation to the royal domain by the Bourbons in 1757. It has also withstood severe earthquakes, such as those of 1688 and 1732. We suggest admiring it as you stroll through the centre: its bulk still dominates the village.
