Gesualdo's mother church, the oldest in the town, built against the castle and rich in works including a Last Supper of 1602.
The mother church of San Nicola is the oldest in Gesualdo and is dedicated to the patron saint. Probably founded in the 12th century against the castle walls, it is recorded from the early 16th century; under the Gesualdo family it gained a wooden choir in 1538 as well as paintings and furnishings. Rebuilt after the 1732 earthquake, it was damaged in 1962 and 1980 and reopened in 1997.Overlooking Piazza Umberto I, it has an austere façade with a Baroque doorway of 1760 and a Latin-cross interior with side chapels. We recommend the Last Supper by Giovanni Andrea Taurella from 1602 and the Miracle of the Madonna della Neve, linked to Carlo Gesualdo, as well as the marbles by Raimondo Belli. From 30 November to 6 December the relics of Saint Andrew are displayed.
