An Early Christian baptistery on the border with Padula, built over a spring praised by Cassiodorus, among the oldest monuments of the Vallo di Diano.

On the border between Sala Consilina and Padula stands the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, also called of Marcelliano, one of the most interesting monuments in the Vallo di Diano. The Early Christian building rises over a spring recorded by Cassiodorus, who tells of a basin with seven steps in which, during night-time baptisms, the water was said to rise miraculously and then return to its level. The baptistery is thought to date from the 5th century, linked to the evangelisation of the area by Saint Priscus and Saint Paulinus. In the Norman period Roger II entrusted it to the Knights Templar as a commandery. We recommend taking time to look at the basin and let yourself be carried away by this story suspended between faith and legend.
