Art Gallery of the Basilica of Sant'Alfonso

Next to the basilica in Pagani, the Sant'Alfonso Art Gallery, opened in 1996, brings together about a hundred paintings, mostly on sacred subjects, including many portraits of the saint. We like to linger over the 16th-century works: a Madonna and Child by Decio Tramontano, the Annunciation and the Madonna of the Rosary by the Flemish Teodoro d'Errico, and a Christ crowned with thorns attributed to Polidoro da Caravaggio.There are also fine examples of the 18th-century Neapolitan school, such as the Adoration of the Child by Antonio Sarnelli. Two large canvases with the Birth of the Virgin and the Birth of St John the Baptist, because of their size, are instead in the basilica's choir. We recommend combining the visit with the church.
