Church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Pagani

In Pagani, the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine is the sanctuary of the Madonna known as "delle Galline" (of the Hens), at the heart of one of Campania's most heartfelt festivals, held in the octave of Easter. According to tradition, the sacred image was found thanks to some hens scratching in the ground. The church was raised to a Marian sanctuary in 1954.We are struck by the 17th-century Baroque façade, with columns, pediment and stucco decoration, flanked by statues of Modesty and Hope. Inside, with a single nave, we suggest looking at the wooden ceiling, the organ of 1790 and the 18th-century statue of the Virgin in the third chapel. It is even more moving to come back during the festival, amid singing and popular devotion.
