Museum devoted to ancient Capua in the centre of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, together with the famous Mithraeum and its tauroctony fresco.

The Archaeological Museum of Ancient Capua, opened in 1995, occupies a 19th-century complex built over the remains of the Capitolium, in the southern part of the ancient forum, and incorporates the medieval Tower of Sant'Erasmo. Its nine rooms take you from prehistory to the Roman age, with grave goods, evidence of Greek and Etruscan influence, the Samnite and Campanian period and the Roman sanctuaries.A short distance away you can visit the Mithraeum, discovered by chance in 1922 and dated to the 2nd century AD: a vaulted room about twelve metres long with benches for the initiates and, on the end wall, the extraordinary fresco of the tauroctony, with Mithras slaying the bull between the Sun, the Moon and the torch-bearers. We suggest seeing them on the same day.
