The remains of ancient Suessula in the Calabricito Woods, a town inhabited by Ausones, Etruscans, Samnites and Romans along the Via Popilia.

In the Calabricito Woods, on the outskirts of Acerra, lie the traces of ancient Suessula, the town that gave its name to the valley east of the Campanian plain. The earliest evidence comes from a 9th-century BC necropolis linked to the first Ausonian inhabitants; the territory then entered the commercial sphere of the Etruscans. We like to think of how many peoples succeeded one another on this same land.It was the Samnites, in the 5th century BC, who gave Suessula the appearance of a true city, with walls and public buildings. Passing to Rome, in 337 BC it became a municipium with its own laws and magistrates, and enjoyed its greatest splendour between the 2nd century BC and the 1st century AD, thanks to its position on the Via Popilia. We recommend combining the visit with the town's archaeological museum.
