Carolino Aqueduct

  • Visit: about 20 min

Vanvitelli's great aqueduct for the Royal Palace of Caserta, with the Ponti della Valle: three tiers of arches 95 metres high.

Commissioned by Charles of Bourbon, after whom it is named, and designed by Luigi Vanvitelli, the aqueduct was inaugurated in 1762 after sixteen years of work involving the best mathematicians of the Kingdom. Its route of about 38 kilometres brought water to San Leucio, the Royal Palace and the fountains of the Park, as well as strengthening the water supply of Naples.Much of the route runs underground, but in the Maddaloni valley the work reveals all its grandeur: the Ponti della Valle, three tiers of arches 95 metres high linking Monte Longano to Monte Garzano. Their perfect state of preservation moves us every time. We recommend admiring them in the sunset light.
