Swabian castle at Cancello, a hamlet of San Felice a Cancello, with a square plan and corner towers guarding the Suessola valley.
On a height overlooking the entrance to the Suessola valley, at Cancello, stand the remains of the Castle of Matinale, also known as Rudovaco. Its construction is attributed to Thomas II of Aquino, Count of Acerra, on the occasion of his marriage to Margaret of Swabia, daughter of Frederick II. Over the centuries it hosted William I of Sicily, Manfred and King Ladislaus; in 1799 it was the headquarters of the French general Championnet and in 1943 of the Allied command.We like reading its architecture on site: a square plan with corner towers, a fifth tower protecting a postern and the tallest tower at about 20 metres, with towers whose walls are two and a half metres thick. The limestone entrance portal recalls those of the castles of Bari and Gioia del Colle. Today only the south-eastern wing of the original layout remains: we suggest admiring it with a little imagination.
