Church · Acerra (NA)

16th-century church on Piazza Castello, at the heart of Acerra's Roman layout, built in place of the older Santa Maria la Nova.
Overlooking Piazza Castello, a few steps from the medieval castle, this church stands in a special spot: the square lies at the crossing of the decumanus and cardo of the Roman town, and Acerra's quadrilateral layout still recalls it today. We like strolling here, reading the memory of the ancient city in its streets. Before the present building there was a small church called Santa Maria la Nova, already mentioned in a feudal inventory of 1481. When the district grew and the little church needed restoration, it was decided to replace it with a new building, erected in the early 16th century as the Church of Purgatory. We recommend visiting it together with the nearby castle.
