Tower 28 (Walls of Paestum)
Photo: Turismo Campano · Illustrazione

A tower of the Lucanian walls of Paestum, built in travertine blocks along the circuit of almost five kilometres.

Tower 28 also belongs to the great city walls of Paestum, which surround the ancient city with four main gates and dozens of small posterns, the openings used for sorties during sieges. The towers, 28 in all, punctuated the course of the walls and strengthened their defence. The wall is made of two travertine faces linked by cross walls and filled with earth, more than five metres thick. We love discovering it at a leisurely pace, perhaps starting from Porta Sirena or Porta Giustizia: we recommend sunset, when the stone glows with warm colours.
