One of the towers of the Paestum walls, the mighty defensive circuit almost five kilometres long around the ancient city.

Tower 27 is part of the walls of Paestum, one of the best-preserved ancient defensive systems in Italy. The circuit, almost five kilometres long, traces a roughly trapezoidal perimeter and was strengthened by 28 towers, mostly square and in some cases circular or pentagonal. The first phase of the walls dates back to the 4th century BC, in the Lucanian period, and they were then repaired and altered for centuries. We recommend walking or cycling the outer perimeter, looking at the huge travertine blocks: it is a different, less crowded way to discover Paestum beyond the temples.
