Tower · Maiori (SA)

Viceregal tower from 1584, also called Torre Mezzacapo, perched on the ridge between Maiori and Minori, with three gun ports.
Also known as Torre Mezzacapo, this tower clings to the rocky ridge west of Minori beach. It was built in 1584 to defend the coasts of Maiori and Minori, and takes its name from the nearby Annunziata grotto. It has a single level and is shaped like a truncated pyramid, with an underground cistern and a parade ground. It belongs to the most common type of coastal tower, the one with three gun ports, that is three openings for cannon. When it lost its defensive role it was incorporated into the castle of one of Maiori's most illustrious families, hence its new name. Today it is not accessible: we like admiring it from the outside, sheer above the sea.
