San Sebastiano Bastion in Maiori

  • Visit: about 1 h 15 min

Last surviving stretch of Maiori's early medieval walls, with merlons, arrow slits and two of the six original round towers.

Of the walls that defended Maiori towards the sea in the early Middle Ages, only the San Sebastiano bastion remains. It is an imposing stretch of wall, with merlons and arrow slits still clearly visible, although about a third of it is buried because the road level was raised. We like discovering how the town was once protected. At the junction with the new provincial road to Chiunzi a small round tower survives, the Torretta Mandina. Further east you come across other sections of curtain wall and a second tower: they are the only two survivors of the six original towers, spread among the gates that opened onto the shore. We recommend looking for them as you stroll.
