The ancient Rheginna Major, founded in the 9th century and once enclosed by walls and towers, crossed by the Regina stream.

The historic centre of Maiori coincides with the ancient Rheginna Major, built in the 9th century by the Salerno prince Sicard. The name distinguished it from nearby Minori, Rheginna Minor, because the larger of the two rivers of the same name flows here. Even today the two streams run through the towns and are called Regina and Reginella. With the arrival of the Swabians the two towns dropped the word Rheginna from their names. In the Middle Ages Maiori was protected by walls and towers, built from the 9th century onwards, and its inhabitants lived mainly from fishing and farming. We like strolling along the main street: we recommend getting lost in the alleys climbing towards the hills.
