13th-century Angevin tower on a headland 30 metres above the sea, guarding the Marina di Praia.

Also known as Torre Sciola or Torre a Mare, Torre Assiola stands on a headland about 30 metres above the sea and separates the Marina di Praia from the rest of the coast. It was commissioned in the Angevin period by Charles I of Anjou, in a place where coral was probably gathered, to spot enemy ships and raise the alarm. It has a truncated-cone base and a crown with gun ports; inside, two superimposed rooms with domed vaults are linked by a staircase built into the thickness of the wall. We like reaching it on foot, climbing steps and ramps from the Amalfi Coast road. Today it is only partly accessible, by request: we recommend enquiring beforehand.
