Tomb of Agrippina

The theatre-nymphaeum of a large Roman seaside villa, traditionally linked to Agrippina, mother of Nero, on the beach at Bacoli.

Tradition links these remains to the tomb of Agrippina, mother of Nero, killed on her son's orders in AD 59 in a villa not far away. In reality it is a theatre-nymphaeum belonging to a large villa on the sea, a place of leisure for the Roman nobility with water features, music and performances.Between the late 1st and early 2nd century, because of bradyseism, the building was transformed into an exedra nymphaeum. Today you can make out three semicircles on different levels, one of them below the level of the beach, and a room with a vault decorated with stucco. We recommend looking carefully at the decoration of the niches and windows.
