Temple of Venus at Baia

  • Visit: about 1 h 30 min
Pictured: Bacoli · Denghiù (it.wikipedia) · Public domain · resized and cropped

A Hadrianic-era bath building on the harbour of Baia, circular inside and octagonal outside, once rich in stucco and glass paste.

On the quay of the port of Baia rises the Temple of Venus, one of the three large buildings known as "temples" or "trugli" typical of this area. It dates from the age of Hadrian and differs from the older Temple of Mercury in its architecture and decoration. It can be visited by booking, and we advise you to plan ahead.Inside the plan is circular, outside octagonal, and the upper drum is marked by eight windows. It was once covered in stucco and glass paste, inside and out. It was probably part of the baths of the Venus sector, now cut off by the modern road. We are struck by how much of it is still buried: the base is only partly visible.
