The great gunpowder works commissioned by Ferdinand II of Bourbon at Scafati in 1851.

The Real Polverificio (Royal Gunpowder Works) was built in 1851 on the orders of Ferdinand II of Bourbon, replacing the Royal Powder Factory of Torre Annunziata. Here gunpowder was tested before being sent to the workshops. It has an imposing façade and a chapel dedicated to St Barbara, patron of explosives experts, now used as an auditorium. A large garden extends around it.
