Augustan-age Roman tomb discovered in 1990 in the basement of a city building, with the columellae of the Decii family.

In the heart of Scafati an archaeological surprise lies hidden: the funerary monument of the Gens Decia, brought to light in 1990 during works in a former cinema and now kept in the building's basement. It dates from between the end of the 1st century BC and the beginning of the 1st century AD.The excavation uncovered several columellae, the characteristic grave markers shaped like a stylised bust. We find it moving to read their names: two belong to a father and son of the Decii family, one to a freedwoman called Grata and another to a slave named Methe. A small window onto Roman society in the Sarno valley.
