Palazzo Mayer in Scafati

19th-century residence of the founder of a large textile mill, now the Town Hall, with the public gardens on the river.

Next to the old bridge over the Sarno and not far from the station, an important spinning mill, one of the largest in the area, was built in Scafati in the early 19th century. The factory sheds have disappeared, but the residence of its founder, the industrialist Giovanni Giacomo Mayer, still overlooks the riverbank. The palace stands near the spot where Scafati's ancient tower once stood, demolished at the beginning of the 20th century, and today it houses the Town Hall. We recommend taking a stroll in the lovely garden around it, which became the public gardens in 1933: a very pleasant green corner in the town centre.
