Campi Flegrei Archaeological Park – Piscina Mirabilis

  • Visit: about 1 h 30 min
Pictured: Bacoli · Denghiù (it.wikipedia) · Public domain · resized and cropped

The great Roman cistern of Bacoli, a "cathedral of water" carved into the tuff.

The Piscina Mirabilis was the final reservoir of the Serino aqueduct and supplied the Roman fleet stationed at Misenum. It is one of the largest Roman cisterns known. The rows of pillars and the high vaults create a space that feels like a cathedral. Visits must be booked: the cistern is open on set days and at set times.
