Piana Romana Chapel

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 380 m

At Piana Romana, in the countryside of Pietrelcina, the chapel holds the elm linked to Padre Pio's first stigmata.

In the Piana Romana district, where the Forgione family had their farm, stands a small chapel dedicated to St Francis, built in 1958 on the very spot where the young friar used to withdraw to pray inside a straw hut. We like arriving here unhurriedly, leaving the village behind and immersing ourselves in the silence of the fields that accompanied the saint's youth. The single-nave interior preserves what remains of the elm under which Padre Pio received the first signs of the stigmata, an episode he himself recounted in a letter to his spiritual father. We also recommend looking for the well not far away: according to tradition it was dug at the spot the friar pointed out to his father, who could not find water. A simple and very intense place.
