Church of the Sacra Famiglia in Pietrelcina

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 380 m

Three-aisled neo-Romanesque church beside the Capuchin friary of Pietrelcina, wanted by Padre Pio and consecrated in 1951.

The Church of the Sacra Famiglia (Holy Family) is part of the Capuchin friary complex in Pietrelcina, built on the site indicated by Padre Pio himself. Work began in 1926 and was only completed in 1951, the year the Archbishop of Benevento consecrated it. For many pilgrims it is a direct legacy of the saint to his home town, and we consider it a stop not to be missed. The neo-Romanesque building is divided into a nave and two aisles: the wider central nave is covered by a cross vault, while the side aisles have barrel vaults. Along the aisles open several altars with wooden sculptures and mosaics made in the Vatican school style. We recommend combining the visit with the nearby friary museum, which gathers objects linked to the friar's life.
