Church of Sant'Anna in Pietrelcina

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 335 m

In the Castello quarter of Pietrelcina, the Church of Sant'Anna holds the font where Padre Pio was baptised in 1887.

The Church of Sant'Anna stands in the quarter known as Castiello, the oldest part of Pietrelcina. Its origins date back to the 13th century, but it was rebuilt after the 1688 earthquake and until 1843 it was the village's parish church. The two-aisled interior has a wooden ceiling with painted coffers and several wooden sculptures. We are moved to think that it was here that Padre Pio was baptised on 26 May 1887 and received his first communion and confirmation in 1899. The baptismal font is to the left of the entrance. We recommend looking beneath the altar for the relics of St Pius the Martyr, to whom the young Francesco Forgione was devoted and who inspired his religious name.
