18th-century palazzo on piazza del Plebiscito, built for the royal cadets; named after Leopold of Bourbon, Prince of Salerno.

On piazza del Plebiscito, opposite the Royal Palace, stands Palazzo Salerno, built from 1775 by the Messina-born architect Francesco Sicuro by transforming two old convents. It originally housed the army cadets; the name comes from Leopold of Bourbon, Prince of Salerno, who lived here. Today it is home to military commands and, together with the Prefecture building, forms a backdrop to the great square.
