A 955-metre mountain between Contrada and Forino, with the cave sanctuary of San Michele dug by the Lombards and celebrated on 8 May.

Faliesi is a 955-metre peak of the Campanian Apennines, south-west of Avellino, between the territories of Contrada and Forino. The western side has rock faces marked by landslides, the most serious in 2005. Broom, chestnut and oak trees grow on its slopes, home to foxes, wild boar, dormice and peregrine falcons. We are fascinated by the history linking it to the Lombards: after defeating the Byzantines on the Forino plain in 663, Romuald's troops dug a cave in the mountain in honour of the Archangel Michael. The sanctuary is still a pilgrimage destination, and every 8 May worshippers from Avellino, Contrada and Forino gather for Mass and traditional celebrations. We advise taking care in summer, when fires are frequent.
