Mountain · Pietravairano (CE)

Monte San Nicola

  • Visit: about 2 h 25 min
  • 524 m

A 524-metre hill above Pietravairano, Monte San Nicola holds the famous Roman temple and theatre complex on its summit.

North-east of Pietravairano rises Monte San Nicola, a 524-metre hill stretching for more than three kilometres and continuing southwards as Monte Caievola. We like this ridge for the open views it offers over the countryside of upper Caserta province and for the surprise it holds on one of its two summits.Up there, in fact, lies the temple and theatre of San Nicola, rediscovered in 2000, which has made the hill famous in recent years. We suggest climbing at a gentle pace, combining a walk in nature with a visit to the archaeological site: a pairing that makes the mountain a pleasant destination for anyone who loves ancient history in the open air.
