In Pietravairano, at the highest point of the medieval village, the truncated-cone Angevin keep recalls the ancient Castrum Petrae.

Pietravairano already appears in 1070 as Castrum Petrae in a document from the Montecassino archive, and in the Norman period it was the fief of Alessandro de Petra, lord of the castle. The de Petra family also ruled the place under the Angevins, until at the end of the 16th century the fief passed to the Grimaldi. What remains of the fortification is above all the Angevin keep, shaped like a truncated cone, which towers over the highest point of the village. We suggest reaching it by climbing through the lanes of the old centre, which still keeps its medieval layout, and enjoying the panorama over the surrounding hills from up there.
