Church · Vairano Patenora (CE)

Church dedicated to the patron St Bartholomew in Vairano Patenora, rebuilt between the 18th and 19th centuries on the site of a building of 1310.
In Vairano Patenora, the Church of San Bartolomeo is dedicated to the town's patron saint. A first church was built in 1310; the building we see today replaced it after lengthy works between 1779 and 1823. When the new church was completed, the furnishings of the earlier one were moved here, including the coat of arms of the d'Avalos barons, lords of the fief, and the remains of St Clement, which had arrived in Vairano in 1777.We like telling the legend linked to the patron: in 1195 St Bartholomew is said to have appeared to a band of Saracen raiders, persuading them to give up their attack on the town; later entering a church, the invaders recognised in the saint's statue the old man who had stopped them. We suggest visiting the church with this story in mind, perhaps combining it with a stroll through the old village.
