The old town of Ailano grows out of its medieval castle, the starting point of the narrow, winding lanes that characterise the village. The fortified village took shape in the Norman period, when sources record it as Athilanum and then Aylanum, and the castle remains its historic heart.Of the structure, a mighty round tower with a battered base still survives, the most recognisable element of the fortification. Over the centuries Ailano passed through many feudal families, from the Aquino in the 13th century to the Rajola Pescarini in the 18th.
