Cape Misenum, base of the Roman fleet, with its lighthouse and views over the gulf.

Cape Misenum closes the Gulf of Pozzuoli to the south. In Roman times this was Misenum, base of the imperial fleet in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was from here that Pliny the Elder set out in AD 79 to rescue people during the eruption of Vesuvius. You can walk up to the lighthouse, where the view sweeps over Procida, Ischia and the whole Bay of Naples.
