Maiori Castle Museum (Castle of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano)

On the hill of Thoro-Plano, above Maiori, the Castle of San Nicola was built from the 9th century onwards around the church of the same name, not as a lordly residence but as a fortified refuge for the population during raids. It was part of the defensive system of the Republic of Amalfi and was enlarged in the 15th century by the Piccolomini family.Its polygonal plan is enclosed by walls and nine towers; some rooms house archaeological finds and old tools, including large wine amphorae. We love reaching it on foot, climbing hundreds of steps through vineyards, lemon groves and olive trees. We recommend booking your visit: the view over the gulf and Ravello repays every effort.
