A hilltop village with a medieval street pattern, gathered around the mother church on Piazza Plebiscito.

The historic centre of Sanza occupies the top of a hill and, according to tradition, was founded by the Sontini, a people allied with the Lucanians. The streets and squares keep their medieval layout, and walking through the alleys is the best way to grasp its intimate character. The heart of the village is Piazza Plebiscito, overlooked by the mother church. We also recommend noticing the open spaces that break up the old fabric: they are the result of demolitions in the 18th century, when Sanza enjoyed its period of greatest prosperity and efforts were made to make homes healthier and more liveable.
