Village of Roman origin along the road between Telesia and Benevento, with the hermitage of San Michele on Monte Caruso behind it.

Foglianise has Roman origins and enjoyed its best period between the 3rd and 4th centuries, when a well-organised farming estate called Folianus existed here. It was brought to life by trade along the road linking ancient Telesia to Benevento, a branch of the great Roman road network. In the Lombard period documents mention a curtis in the area, assigned to members of the Benevento court. In the same period, halfway up Monte Caruso, the first core of the hermitage of San Michele arose around a cave, later growing into a sanctuary. We recommend combining a walk through the village with the climb to the hermitage.
