Former Church of San Pietro (Teggiano)

  • Visit: about 20 min
  • 636 m

The former Church of San Pietro in Teggiano, built on the remains of a temple of Aesculapius, now houses the Diocesan Museum.

The former Church of San Pietro is an unmissable stop in Teggiano: its foundations rest on the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Aesculapius, still visible along the right side of the façade. A white stone staircase leads to a three-arched portico, beneath which opens a Renaissance portal commissioned in 1476 by the Sienese Ambrogio Malavolta, topped by a fresco of the Crucifixion.Today the building houses the Diocesan Museum, with archaeological finds, frescoes, paintings and sculptures. We suggest looking for the two funerary monuments: that of the knight Bartolomeo Francone, of 1401, supported by a lion, and that of Archdeacon Guglielmo Rossi, held up by three telamons representing the ages of life.
