A large Roman cistern carved into the tuff at Miseno, divided into five aisles by rows of pillars, open to visitors on request.

Behind the evocative name of Grotta della Dragonara lies a large Roman cistern carved into the tuff cliff. The plan is quadrangular and the space is divided into five aisles by three rows of twelve sturdy pillars, faced in opus reticulatum and cocciopesto. It can be visited on request, and we advise you to plan ahead.Originally the water came in from above, through three large openings in the barrel vault. Recent excavations have uncovered a basin with steps and a slope leading to an opening that connects with another cistern below. We like discovering these details of ancient hydraulic engineering.
